One of the worst feelings in the world is when someone tells your secret that you never wanted anyone to know. Yes, the secret teller knew it but that person was not supposed to tell anybody else. You never dreamed that your secret would be told. But now, it’s out in the open.
Many Christians have well-kept secrets. All of us had a past before we came to Christ. And for some of us, our past was not pretty. It may have included criminal activity or activities that could even jeopardize our position in the community today. Maybe our past just causes us to be embarrassed about the things we used to do. Whatever it may be? Romans 3:23-24 tells us, ‘For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.’ (NLT)
God’s Grace
The good news is that in spite of our past, we now belong to the body of believers who are protected. Our protection is a gift from God. It stems from God’s Grace. God’s Grace is God’s kindness that He gives us just because we now belong to Him. We cannot earn it or buy it. We will only begin to appreciate it when we develop a relationship with God as His children.
God has three divine attributes that the devil does not have. One, God is omniscient. He knows everything including our secrets. Two, God is omnipresent. We cannot escape His presence. King David in Psalm 139 (NLT), speaks to God saying, ‘I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night- – but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.’
Nothing Is Hidden From God
And yes, God knows and sees the works of the devil. The Bible warns us in I Peter 5:8 (NLT), ‘Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.’ The devil operates in many ways. He has many tools that he will use against the believer. One of these tools is a shovel. Satan continuously tries to dig up the past and confront us with it. He often will use others in his schemes to discourage us in our walk as believers. His goal is to cause us to fear or become anxious about our past. The devil wants to weaken our faith in God. What will happen if others learn our secrets?
We, however, must adopt the attitude of the Apostle Paul. Paul, known for his persecution of the Christians, became one of the greatest Apostles after he was converted to Christianity. In Philippians, Chapter 3, he said, ‘ . . . I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.’
The omniscient and omnipresent God knew our past when He forgave us of our sins. Nothing was hidden. And so, our response to the devil and to those who the devil will use must be, ‘All is known, all is forgiven.’
Our Greatest Secret
Jesus is not our accuser. The Bible tells us that Jesus did not come to condemn us but to give us eternal life. Jesus is the one who suffered and died for us; and then rose again on the third day. He is the only One Who has the right to accuse us or condemn us. But instead, He chooses to treat us just the way He treated the woman accused of adultery in John Chapter 8. Jesus told her, ‘Go and sin no more.’ (https://www.gotquestions.org/woman-caught-in-adultery.html)
Do not allow anyone to be your accuser including the devil. God is not only omniscient and omnipresent but He is also omnipotent. In His Grace, He uses His power to forgive our sins and to erase our past. And so tell those who try to threaten you with details from your past including the devil that you have a secret to share with them. ‘All is known, all is forgiven.’
