GHSM God Keeps His Promises

Earlier we wrote a conversation entitled, Standing on the Promises of God. Thinking about that conversation led us to search for questions about God’s promises. And did we find the questions! There are so many. Does God keep His promises? What are God’s promises? Are God’s promises conditional? Why does God make promises? Will God fulfill His promises immediately?

The nature of God’s promises will not allow us to answer all these questions in one conversation. So instead, let’s look at the one that if not answered in the affirmative will make all the others insignificant. Does God keep His promises?

Yes, Unequivocally, God Keeps His Promises

From Genesis to Revelation, we read about God keeping His promises. One of my favorite stories is about Joshua.  A successor to Moses, Joshua had a tremendous responsibility. God had promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites. Originally Moses was going to lead them into the land; but because of a mistake, he was not allowed to go into the land. Instead, Joshua became the leader.

The Canaanites were not a people who would be easily conquered. And so, the Israelites knew that they would need God’s help to possess this promised land. God made Joshua a promise that stands as a Spiritual Principle today. (Godly Meditation on Courage (intouch.org)

Listen! God said to Joshua, “Keep this Book of the Law (The Bible) always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8-9, NIV)

What was God saying to Joshua? Read and believe My Word. Think about My Word. Apply My Word to your life. Live for Me. Follow My commandments. Do what I tell you to do. You will have prosperity and success when you do these things. What did Joshua do? He followed God’s directions. God kept His promise.

God’s Greatest Promise

Joshua’s story is just one story in the Bible where God kept His promise. There are many more. Think about Elizabeth and Zechariah, Simeon or the thief hanging next to Jesus on the cross. We know that God kept His promises to Elizabeth and Zechariah and to Simeon. By faith we believe Jesus kept His promise to the thief.

God’s greatest promise to the world was that He would give His Son Jesus as the sacrifice to pay for our sins. What would happen to us, those who are Christians, if God had not kept His promise? This is a question that sends chills down our spine.

Our Final Thoughts for This Conversation

The recorded acts of God in the Bible and our faith in God lead us to answer, “God keeps His promises.” One area however that we did not discuss is our own experiences. Our quick response is, “Yes, God has kept His promises to us.” This question, however, deserves more than a quick response. We would like to share your experiences along with our experiences in our next conversations.
